"Zen means keeping a clear mind, moment-to-moment. The Koan, or question, tests the actual clarity of the practitioner's mind:
                                             Is this a fan?   (see the picture)
If you say Yes, you are attached to name and form. This answer is not acceptable. If you say No, you are attached to emptiness, in which there are no distinctions. This answer is also not acceptable. Neither Yes nor No is an acceptable Zen answer. So, what would be a perfect, non-conceptual, bull's-eye response - one that could not be bettered by any Zen Master?"

         Bring your answer to our weekly Zen Center (sangha) guest nights. Instruction in Zen Meditation is available. A forty minute meditation session is followed by a Dharma talk or reading. Afterwards, refreshments are served providing an opportunity to meet and talk with other practitioners. Optional private koan interviews with Patricia Zenma Shelton are also available when she is in residence.

         Two day retreats are held one weekend every month at our centers in the Boston area, the Berkshires, and Fort Lauderdale Florida.

         Ms. Shelton engaged in Koan study with Zen Master Seung Sahn from 1975 until his death on November 30, 2004. She taught the accredited course Introduction to Zen Practice at Boston University for fifteen years (1985-2000), and was one of the twenty-six presenters at the first Buddhism in America Conference. Ms. Shelton has been leading sanghas in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Florida for over three decades.
